Mulching
As we are in a dry area undergoing a desertification process we save water and arrange reforestation to attract more rain. Composting and mulching - as most important instruments of perma culture- are important steps to save water. Mulching is a special method used in gardens, parks and for growing up fruits and vegetables (compare Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulch). The soil between the plants, flowers, bushes and trees will be covered with leaves, grass and other materials. The roots stay cool even in a hot climate, the soil keeps the humidity, and weeds cannot grow quickly. The wind erosion is prevented as well as the washing out of soil by heavy rainfalls. The mulch will become compost after some time. Earth worms and other micro organisms bring the mulch material into deeper soil layers and transform it into valuable food for the plants.
Mulching was the main topic of the Nature Day in June 2012. Project Manager Horst Wagner explained why mulching is necessary and meaningful. Afterwards the students mulched some trees with materials they had brought to the school area. Now these trees have to be watered only every fourth or fifth day instead of every single day. Rice husk, tamarinde skins and other materials can be used for mulching purpose.
